Govt to provide Rs. 500,000 per disaster-damaged house without assessment: Minister

Minister of Public Security Ananda Wijepala says the government has decided to provide Rs. 500,000 per household to address housing damage caused by the disaster situation, without conducting individual damage assessments. Sri Lanka vehicle registrations down 9.7-pct in November 2025

ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka’s vehicle sales fell across categories by 9.7 percent in November 2025, declining for the second month, though there was a pick-up in Japanese used vehicles, an analysis of vehicle registry data by J B Securities, a Colombo-based equities brokerage shows. Total vehicles registered fell by 4,271 units to 43,810 in November, from 48,081 in October and 48,897 in September. CID probe launched into hoax bomb threat at Kandy District Secretariat

Police suspect that a claim alleging explosives had been planted at the Kandy District Secretariat was an attempt to create public unrest. Sri Lanka regulator extends Sanasa Life Insurance suspension

ECONOMYNEXT – The Insurance Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka has extended the suspension of the registration granted to Sanasa Life Insurance Co PLC to carry on long-term insurance businesses, the company said in a stock exchange filing. The suspension has been extended from December 27 to January 30, 2026. Fraud complaints filed over postponed Ne-Yo concert

Media reports say fraud complaints have been lodged with the Kollupitiya Police against the organisers of the postponed Ne-Yo concert in Colombo. Former minister arrested by CID over pistol linked to underworld figure

Former Minister Douglas Devananda was arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on Friday in connection with an investigation into the alleged transfer of a firearm to an organised criminal, police said. According to the Acting Police Media Spokesperson, the arrest relates to allegations that a pistol issued to Devananda had later been found in the possession of underworld figure Makandure Madush.
