Vietnam’s Vikyno leads Sri Lanka 2-wheel tractor market

ECONOMYNEXT – Vietnam’s Vikyno has become the market leading 2-wheel tractor in Sri Lanka in 2025, an analysis of Sri Lanka’s vehicle registry data by J B Securities, a Colombo-based equities brokerage shows. In November 99 Vikyno two-wheel tractors were sold, up from 53 in October and 33 in September. The Vikyno is advertised online by Brown and Company. Japan’s Kubota was the second most popular 2-wheel tractor with 54 units registered in November, 38 in October and 22 in September. Over 320,000 cannabis plants found on six acres of land in Haldummulla

Sri Lankan security forces have uncovered a large-scale cannabis cultivation following intelligence received by the Army Intelligence Unit, police said. The raid was carried out on December 26 in coordination with the Bandarawela Divisional Criminal Intelligence Unit in the Haldummulla area. Searches conducted in the Aluthwela Reserve Forest and the Unakanda Reserve Forest led to the seizure of more than 320,000 cannabis plants cultivated across approximately six acres of land. Police said the seized cannabis plants are estimated to be worth nearly Rs. 80 million. Further legal action is being carried out by the Bandarawela Divisional Intelligence Unit, police said.…

Police seize 133 mobile phones at Boossa high-security prison in 2025

Sri Lankan police have seized 133 mobile phones and other prohibited items during a series of search operations conducted at the Boossa High-Security Prison, the Police Media Division said. The seizures were made during 72 search operations carried out at the prison between January 1 and December 26, 2025, police said. In addition to mobile phones, officers recovered 159 SIM cards, 110 phone chargers, 122 data cables, 56 hands-free devices, 12 mobile phone batteries, three knives, 2.85 grams of heroin, and 40.012 grams of tobacco. BPL coach dies after collapsing on field before match

Mahbub Ali Zaki, the assistant coach of Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) team Dhaka Capitals and a specialist pace bowling coach attached to the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), has died after suffering a heart attack just before the start of a match on Saturday. Sri Lanka sells extra Rs1bn Treasury bills after auction

ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka has sold 1,006 million rupees of treasury bills offered on tap at average rates of 7.95 percent and 8.19 percent, the public debt management office said, bringing the total of bills sold this week to 83.46 billion rupees. Young elephant killed in Habarana van accident

A young elephant, around five years old, was killed early this morning (27) when a van collided with it near the Galoya area on the Habarana-Trincomalee main road, police said. The van, traveling from Habarana toward Trincomalee with 10 passengers on board, hit the elephant while it was reportedly crossing the road. Police further said that the van’s driver and passenger, who were injured in the accident, were admitted to Dambulla Hospital for treatment.
