Sri Lanka President appoints Maithri Wickremesinghe to Central Bank’s Governing Board

ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has appointed President’s Councel Maithri Evan Wickremesinghe as the new member of the Central Bank’s Governing Board after Rajeev Amarasuriya, the current President of the country’s Bar Association relinquished from his duties as a member from June this year. Wickremesinghe’s appointment has been effective from October 2, the Central Bank said in a statement. Wickremesinghe is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (UK) and holds an Honours Degree in Law from the University of Colombo. Wimal Weerawansa accuses Police of distorting his statement to media

National Freedom Front (NFF) Leader and former MP Wimal Weerawansa today (Oct. 10) accused the Tangalle Divisional Crime Investigation Unit of deliberately altering and releasing only selected portions of the statement he provided yesterday (09) to the media. Sri Lanka worker remittances up 25.2-pct in September 2025

ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka’s official remittances rose 25.2 percent to 695.7 million dollars in September 2025, while the total in the first nine months reached 5.81 billion dollars rising 20 percent from a year ago, central bank data showed, with more people leaving to work abroad. The worker remittances hit a six-year high in 2024 after a record number from the island nation’s labour force left the country searching for foreign jobs amid Sri Lanka’s recovery from an unprecedented economic crisis, official data showed. Bodies of two missing boys found in Victoria Reservoir

Police report that the bodies of two 13-year-old children from Ankumbura, Kandy, who had been missing, were discovered this morning (10) in the Victoria Reservoir. The two students had gone missing on 08th October while playing near the Mahaweli River. Suspecting that they may have been swept away by the current, police, alongside local residents, conducted a search operation in the Victoria Reservoir, but were initially unable to locate any trace of them.
