Bimal’s portfolio change : Deputy Transport Minister gives details

Deputy Minister of Transport Prasanna Gunasena has shot down claims by MP Shanakiyan Rasamanickam that the portfolios of Ports and Civil Aviation had been removed from Minister Bimal Rathnayake, likely due to allegations linked to the “323 container controversy”. Construction work commences on Rs. 33 Mn Material Recovery Facility

Construction work on a new Material Recovery Facility in the Wariyapola area commenced yesterday (09), under the “Clean Sri Lanka” National Programme as part of the government’s measures to formalize waste management across the country.  According to the President’s Office, the new facility, which will be established on land belonging to the Wariyapola Pradeshiya Sabha, is estimated to cost Rs. 33 million.  Its primary objective is to systematically collect, sort and direct non-degradable waste such as plastic, polythene and other solid materials for recycling.  Implemented under the joint financial framework of the Clean Sri Lanka Secretariat and the Ministry of…

Sri Lanka rupee stronger against dollar, bond yields slightly down intra day

ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka’s rupee closed at 302.60/68 to the US dollar on Friday, stronger from 302.75/83 the previous day, while bond yields recovered at close, dealers said. A bond maturing on 15.03.2028 closed at 9.10/20 percent, from 9.11/15 percent. A bond maturing on 15.09.2029 closed at 9.67/72 percent. A bond maturing on 15.05.2030 closed at 9.77/80 percent. Wimal Weerawansa fails to prove allegations during Police inquiry

The Tangalle Divisional Crime Investigation Unit has recorded a statement from former Parliamentarian and National Freedom Front (NFF) leader Wimal Weerawansa regarding comments he made about an ongoing investigation. Police said the inquiry relates to remarks made by Weerawansa concerning the arrest of an individual known as Beliatte Sana, also identified as Puwakdandawa Sana. Officers from the Coast Conservation Department this morning (Oct. 10) demolished unauthorized structures that had been built along the Unawatuna beach in Galle. The operation briefly turned tense, prompting police officers to be deployed to maintain order.
