More rains expected after Oct. 21, Met. Department warns

The Department of Meteorology says an increase in rainfall is expected after the 21st of October due to a disturbance developing over the Bay of Bengal. Director General Athula Karunanayake said the atmospheric disturbance currently positioned to the southeast of Sri Lanka is likely to develop into a low-pressure area, leading to enhanced showers across most parts of the island. Although the system will not directly affect Sri Lanka, the country will experience intensified rainfall, he added. 12 injured as school bus overturns near Ragama

At least 12 people, including nine schoolchildren, were injured this afternoon (19) when a bus carrying students overturned near the railway crossing between Ragama and Batuwatta. Police said the group consisted of Cub Scouts from a school in Sapugaskanda who were returning from a jamboree held at Batuwatta Maha Vidyalaya. Kush cannabis cultivation at rented house: Foreigner arrested

A Belarusian national has been taken into custody by the Galle District Crime Division for cultivating Kush cannabis in a rented property in the Akmeemana area. Police stated that the suspect had been discreetly growing the plants in two rooms of the house. Investigations revealed that he intended to sell the cannabis to foreigners visiting the country. Bus driver arrested for heroin possession

A bus driver who had travelled from Colombo to Ampara was arrested by officers attached to the Anti-Corruption Unit of the Ampara Police Station on Saturday (18) morning for allegedly transporting heroin. Police said the suspect was taken into custody at the Ampara bus stand following a tip-off. During the search, officers found a parcel containing 9 grams and 615 milligrams of heroin in his possession. A police sniffer dog was also deployed to inspect the bus.
