CID seeks 90-day detention order for arrested lawyer

The Criminal Investigation Department today informed the Colombo Magistrate’s Court that it intends to seek a detention order to further detain, for a period of 90 days, the female lawyer who was arrested on suspicion of aiding and abetting those involved in the murder of Ganemulla Sanjeewa.

New Fuel Prices announced

The Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) has announced a revision of fuel prices effective from midnight today (October 31). According to the CPC: Petrol 92 Octane price will be reduced by Rs. 5 per litre, bringing the new price to Rs. 294. Super Diesel price will be increased by Rs. 5 per litre, making the new price Rs. 318. Prices of all other fuel types will remain unchanged. Kurunthur dispute: Buddhist monk exposes Archaeology Department Irregularities

Tamil National Alliance (TNA) Parliamentarian Shanakiyan Rasamanickam says the Chief Incumbent of the Mihintale Raja Maha Viharaya, Ven. Walawahengunawewe Dhammarathana Thero, has exposed serious irregularities within the Department of Archaeology related to the Kurunthur Malai land dispute. CID briefs court on lawyer and five actresses connected to Padme

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) informed the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court today that a female lawyer and five actresses are under investigation over their links to underworld figure Kehelbaddara Padme. CID officers said attorney Thamara Kumari Abeyrathne, arrested for allegedly assisting the gunman in the Ganemulla Sanjeewa murder, was being detained and questioned. Investigations have revealed that she had provided the shooter with two neckties, a lawyer’s vehicle emblem sticker, copies of the Penal Code and Criminal Procedure Code, and photographs used to prepare a forged lawyer identification card. Sri Lanka inflation 2.1-pct over 12 months to Oct 2025, 2.4-pct over 37 months

ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka’s consumer prices rose 2.1 percent in the 12 months to October 2025, but prices have risen only 2.4 percent in the 37 months since the central bank’s deflationary policy started to show in the balance of payments. The widely watched Colombo Consumer Price Index rose 0.1 percent to 193.8 points over the month of October with the food and non-alcoholic beverages falling 0.1 percent and non-foods rising 0.2 percent. Rise in CCPI Overall Rate of Inflation in October 2025

The Overall Rate of Inflation, measured by the Colombo Consumer Price Index (CCPI) on a year-on-year basis, has increased to 2.1% in October 2025. According to the Department of Census and Statistics, the figure is an increase compared to the 1.5% recorded in September this year.  Food inflation has also increased to 3.5% in October 2025, compared to the 2.9% reported in September. Polish airline ‘Enter Air’ resumes operations to Sri Lanka

Court grants bail to Backoe Saman’s wife

The Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court today granted bail to the wife of underworld figure ‘Backoe Saman’, who has been held in remand custody under the Money Laundering Act.
