Sri Lanka & ADB sign USD 90 Mn loan agreement for road development

The Government of Sri Lanka and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) have signed a loan agreement of USD 90 million for phase 5 of the Second Integrated Road Investment Program (iROAD 2).  According to a statement from the Ministry of Finance, the loan agreement has been signed after the government successfully concluded discussions with the ADB.  The objective of this program is to enhance road transport efficiency by improving connectivity between selected rural communities and key socio-economic centres, while also strengthening the institutional capacity of national road agencies. Kuchchaveli PS SLMC Chairman arrested over Rs. 500,000 bribe

The Chairman of the Kuchchaveli Pradeshiya Sabha, Ainiya Pillai Mubarak (50), and his private driver, M. M. Irshad (34), have been arrested by officers of the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs. 500,000 to issue a land permit. The arrests were made in the Iqbal Nagar area in Kuchchaveli following a complaint lodged by a woman resident of Mullaitivu. 2024 census analysis: More males born, but females live longer

Sri Lanka’s 2024 Population and Housing Census reveals that females continue to make up the majority of the country’s population, a trend first observed in 2001.  Compared to the 2012 Census, the male population percentage has declined in both the Urban and Rural sectors, while a slight increase is recorded in the Estate sector. The Urban sector now reports the highest proportion of females. Historically, males accounted for a larger share of the population, with the 1981 Census recording 51 per cent males. Two persons have been injured in a shooting reported in the Gonagalakanda area in Delgoda, Kalawana, today.  According to the Police, the injured persons have been admitted to the Ratnapura Hospital following the shooting. Today’s CBSL official exchange rates

The Sri Lankan Rupee has appreciated slightly against the US Dollar today (31), compared to Thursday. According to the Central Bank of Sri Lanka, the buying rate of the US Dollar has reduced from Rs. 300.69 to Rs. 300.61.  Meanwhile, the selling rate of the Sri Lankan Rupee has also dropped from Rs. 308.20 to Rs. 308.10. 971 individuals arrested during islandwide drug raids on Thursday

Sri Lanka Police have arrested 971 individuals during nationwide raids conducted yesterday (30) as part of drug eradication measures.  According to the Police, 22 suspects against whom detention orders have been obtained were also arrested during this period.  Ten (10) individuals taken into custody have been sent to rehabilitation centres.  The Police have also seized a total of 735 grams of heroin, 2.422 kilos of ICE, 603 grams of cannabis, 01 gram of kush, and 27 grams of hashish.  The arrests and narcotics seizures were done during the 987 raids conducted islandwide. Rs. 99 Mn loss : Hussein Bhaila arrested

Former chairman of the Sri Lanka State Trading Corporation (STC), Hussein Ahamed Bhaila, has been arrested by the Bribery Commission for allegedly causing a loss of Rs. 99,679,799.70 to the government in 2015. According to the Bribery Commission, he is accused of having imported 50 temporary warehouses without any need during his tenure, causing a loss to the government and a gain equivalent to that amount to external parties. Illicit assets : Mahinda Rajapaksa’s ex-Chief Security Officer granted bail

Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s Chief Security Officer, Neville Wanniarachchi, who was arrested in connection with the accumulation of illicit assets, has been granted bail. The Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court today released him on a cash bail of Rs. 50,000 and three sureties of Rs. 1 million each. SL supermarkets announce shopping bag rates from Nov 1

Major supermarket chains in Sri Lanka will begin charging customers for single-use plastic shopping bags starting 1 November 2025, in line with the government’s efforts to reduce plastic waste. According to Gazette No. 2456/41 issued on 1 October 2025, supermarkets are required to impose a small fee for “sili-sili” bags provided at checkout counters. The new charges will be Rs. 3 for a medium-sized handle bag and Rs. 5 for a large handle bag. Customs surpasses Rs. 2 trillion in tax revenue for 2025

Sri Lanka Customs on Thursday (30) exceeded the Rs. 2 trillion mark in tax revenue collected for the year.  Issuing a statement, the Director General of Customs, Seewali Arukgoda, said the department is on track to reach its 2025 revenue target of Rs. 2.115 trillion. This achievement marks a record-breaking year for Sri Lanka Customs, setting the highest annual revenue ever collected by a government tax department.
