Central Expressway : Colombo–Kandy road to face road closures for 03 months

The Road Development Authority (RDA) has informed that construction of a bridge in the Bandarawatte area in Kadawatha on the Colombo – Kandy main road, as part of the Central Expressway Project, will be carried out in two stages.  According to the Police, the RDA has informed that the construction will be conducted for a period of three months from today (01) until 31st January 2026.  As such, the relevant road sections will be closed during the night, while alternate traffic arrangements have been announced for the convenience of motorists.  Accordingly, during the first one and a half months of…

SriLankan Airlines group loses Rs10.7bn in three months, operating losses up

ECONOMYNEXT – State-run SriLankan Airlines group has lost 10.7 billion rupees in the three months to June 2025, down from 12.9 billion rupees last year but operating losses had widened, despite improvement in traffic, a Finance Ministry report said. SriLankan had posted revenues of 51.7 billion rupees, up 1.5 billion rupees in the June quarter, helped by high higher traffic volumes and a big improvement in load factor to 82.3 percent a from 74.8 last year. Air rage on Colombo flight : Saudi national punished for mid-air assault

A Saudi national who is alleged to have assaulted and injured a flight attendant aboard a SriLankan Airlines aircraft has been sentenced to three months in prison after admitting guilt in court.  However, Colombo Chief Magistrate Asanga S. Bodaragama today (03) suspended the sentence for five years. The suspect was charged by airport police with three counts, including assault causing injury and intimidation. In addition to the prison sentence, a fine of Rs. 10,000 was imposed. How many vehicles has Sri Lanka imported so far in 2025?

Sri Lanka has imported more than 220,000 vehicles so far this year, generating Rs. 587.11 billion in customs revenue, the single largest contributor to state earnings from imports in 2025, officials told Parliament’s Committee on Ways and Means. According to data presented to the Committee, chaired by MP Wijesiri Basnayake, 55,447 motor cars, 7,331 goods transport vehicles, 142,524 motorcycles, 15,035 three-wheelers, and 1,679 passenger buses and vans had been cleared through Customs as of October 14. Officials said revenue from vehicle imports accounted for 37% of total customs earnings this year, helping the department exceed its annual revenue target well…

UNP HQ renovation : Bribery arrests top former official

Former Executive Director of the State Engineering Corporation, Sarathchandra Gunaratna Jayatilaka, has been arrested on corruption charges. Officers from the Bribery Commission today arrested Jayatilaka for authorizing the use of State Engineering Corporation employees and resources to renovate the United National Party headquarters, “Sirikotha”, without following proper procedures. According to the Bribery Commission, the move resulted in a financial loss of Rs. 1,667,294.87 to the Corporation and an undue benefit to the political party. Former Sri Lanka Railways General Manager arrested over disciplinary order alteration

The Bribery Commission has arrested former General Manager of Sri Lanka Railways, Sumathipala Mahanama Abeywickrama, on corruption charges. Abeywickrama was arrested in connection with a disciplinary order issued by then General Manager B.A.P. Ariyaratne, which called for the immediate dismissal of train driver I.L.K. Dissanayake following a formal inquiry.  According to the Bribery Commission, the order was later altered, and the driver was not dismissed, allegedly granting him an undue benefit. Sri Lanka tourist arrivals rise 21.5-pct in October

ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka’s tourist arrivals increased 21.5 percent from a year ago to 165,193 in October 2025, data from the island’s tourism promotion office showed. There were 48,113 visitors from India in September, making up 29.1 percent of total arrivals, followed by the UK with 12,934 which made up 7.8 percent of arrivals. There were 11,496 visitors (7%) from Russia, 10,864 from China (6.6%), and 9,753 from Germany (5.9%). Total foreign visitors for this year are 1,890,687.
