Sri Lanka rupee weaker, bond yields edge up on short end of curve

ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka’s rupee closed at 308.05/15 to the US dollar in the spot market Thursday, weaker from 308.00/05 the previous day, dealers said, while bond yields edged up on the short end of the yield curve while the long term remained steady. A bond maturing on 15.12.2026 was quoted at 8.25/35 percent, up from 8.20/30 percent. A bond maturing on 15.02.2028 was quoted at 9.08/13 percent. Pre-schools to close from tomorrow amid severe weather

The National Secretariat for Early Childhood Development has announced that Early Childhood Development Centres, including pre-schools, will be closed from tomorrow (28). According to the National Secretariat for Early Childhood Development, the decision has been taken due to the prevalent inclement weather in Sri Lanka.  A total of 30 disaster-related deaths have been reported in the two days of November 26 and 27. Extreme weather : 30 deaths in two days

The Disaster Management Centre (DMC) has reported that 30 deaths occurred over the two days of November 26 and 27 as a result of the adverse weather conditions affecting Sri Lanka. According to the DMC, 19 of the deaths were reported in the Badulla District, 01 each in the Kurunegala and Galle Districts, 04 in the Nuwara Eliya District, and 05 in the Ampara District.  The deaths have occurred due to landslides, flooding, and other weather-related disasters reported in the said areas.  Meanwhile, a total of 40 disaster-related deaths have been reported across Sri Lanka due to the adverse weather…

Air Force rescues three trapped due to Mahawa floods (Video)

Three people who had been trapped on the upper floor of a two‑storey house in Mahawa Ella this afternoon, following flooding caused by the overflow of the Deduru Oya, have been safely rescued. The individuals were rescued by a Bell‑212 helicopter belonging to the Sri Lanka Air Force and transferred to a secure location. Extreme weather : Hotlines introduced to report disasters in Colombo

The government has introduced hotlines for reporting emergency disaster situations arising in the Colombo District due to the prevalent adverse weather conditions.  The emergency contact numbers were introduced during a meeting of the Colombo District Disaster Management Coordinating Unit today (27). Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya says the Ministry of Education, the Department of Examinations, and all authorities will jointly ensure that students sitting for the Advanced Level examination are provided with all necessary facilities. Extreme weather in Sri Lanka : Death toll rises to 39

The Disaster Management Centre (DMC) reports that 39 disaster‑related deaths have occurred so far due to the prevailing adverse weather conditions in Sri Lanka. Seventy‑nine Divisional Secretariat divisions across 17 districts have been affected. In these areas, 4,008 individuals belonging to 1,158 families have been impacted, while 14 persons are still reported missing, according to the Centre. Meanwhile, 10 individuals have sustained injuries due to the disasters, and 131 persons from 41 families have been temporarily sheltered in five relief centres.
