Nine Arch Bridge lighting project postponed indefinitely

The Central Cultural Fund says the opening of the lighting project at the Demodara Nine Arch Bridge, a major attraction for local and foreign tourists, has been postponed indefinitely. Director General Dr. Nilan Cooray said the delay stems from a dispute over obtaining an electricity line through a private property. The landowner has objected to allowing the power cables needed to supply electricity to the transformer installed for lighting the bridge and surrounding area. A Washington resident died of complications from an infection with a bird flu strain never before reported in humans, the state Department of Health said on Friday. The National Building Research Organization (NBRO) has issued an ‘amber’ landslide alert for areas where rainfall in the past 24 hours has exceeded 100 mm. During this Landslide Early Warning period, residents should watch for pre-landslide signs, including cracks in the ground or buildings, ground subsidence, slanting trees or posts, sudden appearance of springs or muddy water, and blockage or disappearance of existing springs. Army facilitates transport for A/L students affected by adverse weather

Several areas in the Galle and Matara districts have been flooded due to ongoing adverse weather conditions. To ensure Advanced Level (A/L) students reach their examination centers without disruption, the army provided transport assistance this morning. Death toll rises to two in Kadugannawa landslide; four hospitalized

The Disaster Management Center reports that the number of fatalities in the landslide at the Lower Kadugannawa area in Ganethenna has risen to two. The deceased include a person who was trapped among the debris. Four others injured in the incident are currently receiving treatment at Mawanella Hospital, hospital sources said. The landslide occurred around 9:00 a.m. today (22) when soil and rocks fell onto a shop in the area. As a result, the Ganethenna junction–Kadugannawa road has been temporarily closed.
