Suspect arrested with largest stock of elephant pearls in Sri Lanka

A man has been arrested in the indigenous village of Mahiyanganaya with a stock of elephant pearls valued at over Rs. 30 million. Four killed in separate road accidents in different parts of Sri Lanka

Four people were killed in separate fatal road accidents reported from Wennappuwa, Mahiyanganaya, Udawalawa, and Kabitigollewa on October 17, police said. In Wennappuwa, a 63-year-old motorcyclist from Koswatta died after his bike collided head-on with a van at Kirimatiyana Road. Two arrested for aiding Ishara Sewwandi

The Colombo Crimes Division (CCD) has arrested two individuals who allegedly assisted Ishara Sewwandi, a suspect wanted in connection with the killing of underworld figure Sanjeewa Kumara Samararatne, alias Ganemulla Sanjeewa. Police said the arrests were made on October 16 and 17 in connection with the February 19, 2025, shooting incident at the Aluthkade Court Complex, where Ganemulla Sanjeewa was killed. The arrested suspects — a 52-year-old woman and her 31-year-old brother-in-law from the Wellipenna area — are accused of helping Sewwandi evade arrest.
