IGP refused protection sought by Weligama PS Chairman before killing – SJB

Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) Weligama Organiser Rehan Jayawickrama has strongly questioned the government’s narrative over the killing of Weligama Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman Lasantha Wickramasekara, calling it a “convenient cover-up under the label of underworld activity.” Jayawickrama revealed that in August 2025, the late Chairman had formally written to the Inspector General of Police (IGP), warning of threats to his life and even outlining a planned assassination attempt either outside court or at the Pradeshiya Sabha premises. Navy takes hold of 1416kg of smuggled Kendu leaves

The Navy took hold of approx. 1416kg of smuggled Kendu leaves, during a search operation conducted in the sea area of Thalawila in Kalpitiya on 21 Oct 25. SLNS Vijaya belonging to the Northwestern Naval Command retrieved this haul of Kendu leaves in 41 sacks, during a search operation in the sea area. It is suspected that smugglers would have left behind the consignment due to heightened naval surveillance in the area.
