BYD vehicles detained in customs : New update

The Court of Appeal today (24) instructed Sri Lanka Customs to expedite the ongoing investigations regarding the engine capacity of the BYD vehicles currently being held. Court of Appeal President, Justice Rohantha Abeysuriya, stated in open court that while Customs plays a vital role in collecting tax revenue for the national economy, the interests of vehicle buyers and importing companies must also be considered. Asset investigation: Former PS Chairman remanded

Former Chairman of the Galenbindunuwewa Pradeshiya Sabha, Samantha Namal Wijeratne, has been arrested by the Assets Investigation Division of the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC). He was taken into custody over a complaint related to unexplained assets allegedly accumulated during his tenure as Chairman from 2011 to 2016. Investigators said Wijeratne had been informed to appear before the Commission to record a statement regarding the inquiry but had failed to do so. Army refurbishes 76 unserviceable vehicles, saving Rs. 10 million monthly

The Sri Lanka Army has refurbished 76 previously unserviceable vehicles and reintroduced them to active service under the instructions of Army Commander Lieutenant General Lasantha Rodrigo. The restored fleet, which includes trucks, buses, water bowsers, Uni-Buffel vehicles, cabs, ambulances, vans, and fuel bowsers, was repaired by the Army’s Corps of Electrical and Mechanical Engineers. The initiative, carried out in line with the Clean Sri Lanka programme, allows the Army to save a significant amount of foreign exchange by avoiding new imports. All Muslim MPs demand release of Holy Qur’an Tamil copies detained by Customs

All Muslim Parliamentarians, including the government and the opposition, have requested the Minister of Religious Affairs, Hiniduma Sunil Senevi, to intervene for the immediate release of the unlawfully detained consignment of the Holy Qur’an (Tamil translation) by the Sri Lanka Customs, which they said violated Fundamental Rights.  The request has been made via a letter to the Minister of Religious Affairs, signed by all Muslim Members of Parliament, including the Deputy Minister of Religious Affairs, Muneer Mulaffer. Oil surges 5% after US sanctions Russian firms Rosneft, Lukoil

Oil prices surged around 5% to a two-week high on Thursday after the U.S. imposed sanctions on major Russian suppliers Rosneft and Lukoil over Moscow’s war in Ukraine, prompting energy firms in China and India to consider cutting Russian imports. The Colombo Crimes Division (CCD) has arrested a suspect for aiding Ishara Sewwandi, the chief suspect in the murder of underworld figure Ganemulla Sanjeewa in February, to flee to India by boat.  According to the Police, the suspect was arrested along with a boat near the Aralithuduwa coastal area in Jaffna.
