Egypt unveils the US$1 billion Grand Egyptian Museum

Egypt inaugurated its long-delayed Grand Egyptian Museum on Saturday, marking the completion of a US$1 billion project more than two decades in the making. Touted as the world’s largest museum dedicated to an ancient civilization, the landmark complex near the Giza Pyramids aims to boost the country’s tourism industry and revitalise its economy. Sri Lanka forex inflows US$2.3trn in September, imports surge to $2.0trn

ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka’s current foreign exchange inflows were 2,337 million US dollars in September, down from 2,521 million dollars in August, while imports surged over 300 million dollars to 2,048 million US dollars, official data showed. Gross current inflows exceeded merchandise imports by only 289 million US dollars in September down from around 600 million US dollars consistently over the past year. Maldives becomes the only country with generational smoking ban

A generational prohibition on tobacco went into effect in the Maldives on Saturday, the country’s Health Ministry said. Maldives is now the only country in the world with such a ban. Massive job scam : Top agency head arrested

The owner of a foreign employment agency in Maharagama has been remanded until November 14 over allegations of defrauding more than Rs. 740 million from job seekers by promising employment opportunities in Romania. The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) told the Gangodawila Magistrate’s Court that around 470 complaints had been lodged with the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE) against the suspect agency. Man arrested with foreign-made pistol and live rounds

A 39-year-old man from Peellawatta, Minuwangoda, was arrested today (1 November) by the Western Province North Crime Division after being found in possession of a foreign-made pistol, one cartridge, and 13 live rounds, police said. The arrest followed a tip-off that prompted police to conduct a raid in the area. The suspect is scheduled to be produced before the Minuwangoda Magistrate’s Court tomorrow (2 November), where authorities will seek a 48-hour detention order.
