President AKD to present 2026 Budget in Parliament tomorrow

The second reading of the Appropriation Bill for the year 2026, commonly referred to as the Budget Speech, is scheduled to take place tomorrow (07). President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, in his capacity as Minister of Finance, is expected to deliver the second reading of the bill in Parliament tomorrow afternoon. Sri Lanka could lose $70 Mn debt relief over revenue target gap : Verité

A Colombo-based think tank, Verité Research, says Sri Lanka could lose the Governance-Linked Bond offer of USD 70 million in debt relief due to a fiscal planning oversight.  In a post on social media, Verité Research states that Sri Lanka will receive USD 70 million in debt relief from its Governance-Linked Bond (GLB) upon meeting two revenue targets. The think tank points out that, however, the issue lies with the Sri Lankan government’s revenue expectations in the fiscal strategy statement, which are lower than the GLB targets. Four suspects arrested with large haul of heroin & ICE in Homagama

Four suspects have been arrested with a large haul of heroin and ICE narcotics in the Homagama area. According to the Police, 1.5 kilos of heroin and over 688g of ‘ICE’ were recovered from a house in Homagama.  The suspects, three men and a woman, were arrested by the Kelaniya Police Crimes Investigation Unit.  Further investigations are underway into the incident. US Courts halt deportation of Indian-origin man wrongfully jailed for 43 years

Two US courts have ordered immigration officials not to deport Subramanyam Vedam, the 64-year-old Indian-origin man who spent four decades in prison before his murder conviction was overturned earlier this year. Vedam was nine months old when he came to the US with his parents legally from India. He grew up in State College, where his father taught at Penn State. An immigration judge stayed his deportation on Thursday until the Bureau of Immigration Appeals decides whether to review his case. That could take several months. Young lives lost in multiple road accidents across Sri Lanka

At least six people have died in a series of road accidents reported across several areas on November 5, police said. In Peliyagoda, a jeep collided with a train at the Thorana Junction level crossing, killing the driver. The victim’s identity has not yet been confirmed. A motorcyclist died in Higurakgoda after losing control of his bike and veering off the road in the Pansalgodella area, police said. In Wariyapola, a 30-year-old man from Minuwangete was killed when his motorcycle was hit by a bus while turning off the Anuradhapura–Padeniyaya Road.
