14-year-old boy killed in Rambukkana train accident

The Police Media Division said a 14-year-old boy was killed after being struck by a train near the Thismalpola railway station in Rambukkana on the morning of September 27. Police said the accident occurred when the victim, a resident of Medagama, had traveled with several friends on a train from Rambukkana to Colombo Fort. At Thismalpola, while the others alighted onto the platform, the boy mistakenly stepped onto the tracks and was hit by the Badulla–Colombo Fort express train. Woman killed in Angoda assault

The Police said a 65-year-old woman from Angoda, under the Welikada Police Division, died on September 26 following an assault. Police investigations revealed that the suspect, a neighbour who was employed at the same cleaning service as the victim, attacked her with a weapon at her residence after a dispute. The woman was admitted to Mulleriyawa Hospital, where she later died. The suspect has been arrested, and Welikada Police are conducting further investigations. Rubber industry calls for SVAT removal delay, warns of liquidity crunch

SL to tighten rules on low-efficiency appliances by year-end

Sri Lanka Sustainable Energy Authority has warned that inefficient household appliances are a leading cause of rising electricity bills in the country. Director General Harsha Wickramasinghe, speaking to the media in Colombo, said surveys have shown that refrigerators over 10 years old and outdated air conditioners consume excessive power. “In the Western Province alone, one in three refrigerators is in unsuitable condition for use.
