Two injured in explosion in Kilinochchi

Two individuals have sustained serious injuries following an explosion reported in Kilinochchi today.  According to the Police, the explosion was reported in the Thattuvan Kottai area in Kilinochchi.  It is reported that a buried explosive had detonated while the individuals were engaged in excavation work at an abandoned house.  The injured individuals have been admitted to the Kilinochchi District Hospital.  The Kilinochchi Police are conducting further investigations. Wind power project : Public protests continue in Mannar

A protest march was held in Mannar today against the government’s decision to continue with the proposed wind power project in Mannar Island.  Carrying slogans and shouting chants, the protesters called on the authorities to refrain from destroying the Mannar Island under the pretext of development. The protest march culminated with a large-scale protest being held in Mannar Town.  Several Tamil politicians and civil groups yesterday announced that a hartal will be held in Mannar Town today, in opposition to the proposed wind power project in Mannar and in condemnation of the recent police assault on civilians. Court grants bail to Archchuna after charged with 4 offences

Jaffna District MP Ramanathan Archchuna, who was arrested earlier today (29), has been granted bail by the Fort Magistrate’s Court. MP Ramanathan Archchuna was released on two sureties of Rs. 01 million each, after he was produced in court today. Commenting on his arrest, a senior Police official said the Jaffna MP had been taken into custody under four charges. Bodies of workers retrieved from Mawanella earth mound collapse

The bodies of three individuals have been recovered from the earth mound that collapsed in Mawanella today (29). A group of workers building a wall in the Manikkawa area was trapped after the earth mound collapsed on them this morning. Today’s CBSL official exchange rates

The Sri Lankan Rupee has changed slightly against the US Dollar today (29 Sept), compared to last Friday. According to the Central Bank of Sri Lanka, the buying rate of the US Dollar has reduced from Rs. 298.86 to Rs. 298.76, while the selling rate has increased from Rs. 306.11 to Rs. 306.29. Bribery Commission DG refutes allegations on JVP- links

Director General of the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) High Court Judge Ranga Dissanayake has refuted claims that he had served in the legal team of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP), it was reported.  According to the Island newspaper, Ranga Dissanayake alleged that a deliberate attempt was being made to derail critically important investigations undertaken by the Commission. Thriposha production temporarily suspended

Chairman of the Sri Lanka Thriposha Limited, Amal Attanayake, says Thriposha production in Sri Lanka has been temporarily suspended since the 21st of September. According to News First, the Sri Lanka Thriposha Company has announced that the suspension was due to the unavailability of maize required for production. Despite Cabinet approval having previously been granted to import 18,000 metric tons of maize for Thriposha production, the Controller General of Imports and Exports had presented amendments to the approval. Tang Renjian, former minister of agriculture and rural affairs, has been sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve for bribery, a court in Changchun, Jilin province, announced on Sunday.
