Sri Lanka recorded its highest-ever tourist arrivals for the month of September, surpassing the previous record set in the benchmark year of 2018. According to the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA), Sri Lanka welcomed a total of 158,971 tourists in September 2025, eclipsing 2018’s tourist arrivals of 149,087. A Navy search operation off Arichchal in Kalpitiya on Wednesday has led to the arrest of two suspects attempting to smuggle more than 4 kilograms of gold by sea. Acting on information received by the Northwestern Naval Command, SLNS Vijaya intercepted a suspicious dinghy in the area. A search of the vessel uncovered 4.45 kilograms of gold disguised as 13 fishing net sinkers, the Navy said in a statement.
