Disaster situation : Sajith calls for an urgent response plan from Govt

Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa has called for the immediate implementation of essential services through disaster management committees in response to the sudden disaster situation that has emerged across Sri Lanka. Speaking in Parliament today, he noted that due to the salinity intrusion issue in the Matara District, a significant area of farmland is at risk, and reports have already confirmed the loss of three lives as a result of this disaster. Over 2000 persons detained as Myanmar military raids notorious scam compound

Myanmar’s military has raided a major online scam operation near the border with Thailand, detaining more than 2,000 people and seizing dozens of Starlink satellite internet terminals, state media has reported. According to a report in Monday’s Myanma Alinn newspaper, Myanmar’s army raided KK Park, a well-documented cybercrime centre, as part of operations starting in early September to suppress online fraud, illegal gambling, and cross-border cybercrime. Sri Lanka rupee opens weaker to dollar, bond yields steady

ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka’s rupee opened at 303.00/05 to the US dollar Tuesday after the long weekend, weaker from 302.90/95 on Friday, dealers said. Two deaths reported due to adverse weather

Two individuals have been reported dead due to the adverse weather conditions experienced in Sri Lanka between 18th and 21st October 2025. According to the Disaster Management Centre, the deaths were reported in the Anuradhapura and Kegalle districts, due to drowning.  A total of 747 persons from 187 families in 16 districts have been affected due to the inclement weather conditions.  The DMC says 152 houses have sustained partial damage due to the adverse weather conditions experienced during this period. Most rain in last 12 hrs : Baddegama 167mm

The highest rainfall in the last 12 hours, ending at 06.00 am today, has been reported in the Baddegama area, recording 167 mm of rain.  According to the Disaster Management Centre (DMC), heavy rainfall has been reported in several areas during this period.  The DMC says 132 mm of rain was recorded in the Walallawita area, 126.40 mm of rain in the Wathurawila area, and 108 mm of rain in Elpitiya.  Between 50- 100 mm of rain has been recorded in the Rambukkana, Dehiovita, Welipitiya, Eheliyagoda, Kiriella, Haldumulla, and Horowpathana areas.
