SLAF pilot killed after diverting helicopter to save people on Bridge

Sri Lanka Air Force Wing Commander Nirmal Siyambalapitiya, the pilot of the Bell 212 helicopter that crashed during disaster relief and rescue operations in Wennappuwa, has passed away, the Air Force confirmed. The helicopter went down while responding to emergencies in flood-affected areas. According to officials, the pilot had reported difficulties and attempted an emergency landing away from a nearby bridge to avoid hitting people seeking shelter there. Sri Lanka Death Toll Climbs to 334, With 370 Still Missing

At least 334 people have died and 370 remain missing, according to the latest situation reports issued by the Disaster Management Centre (DMC). The highest number of deaths has been reported in the districts of Kandy (88 deaths), Badulla (71 deaths), Nuwara Eliya (68 deaths) and Matale (23 deaths). Kandy also recorded the highest number of missing persons, with 150 unaccounted for. A total of 1,118,929 individuals of 309,607 families have been affected islandwide, the DMC said. All Universities and Training Institutes Closed Until December 8

The Ministry of Education has announced that all universities, higher education institutes, and vocational training centres operating under its authority will suspend academic activities until 8 December 2025. In a special statement issued today, the Ministry said the decision applies to every state university, higher education institution, and vocational training institute islandwide. The temporary suspension covers all lectures, examinations, and training programmes.
