Police officer transferred over viral assault video

The Officer-in-Charge of the Kuliyapitiya Police Crime Division is under investigation after a video circulating on social media showed him allegedly assaulting an individual with a pole, police said Wednesday. Following the incident, the officer has been transferred to the Mawathagama Police Station and removed from his duties at Kuliyapitiya pending the outcome of the inquiry, the Police Media Division said. 3 arrested in connection with elephant burned to death

Three people were arrested after a wild elephant died from severe burn injuries sustained when villagers attempted to chase it away using fire, police said. The 40-year-old elephant, known as Amba Bo, was found critically injured on Monday morning lying in the front yard of a house near the Abagaha Wela junction in the Seepukulama area. Sri Lanka to host donor conference to raise rebuilding fund

ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka will host an international donor conference in January 2026 to raise funds for rebuilding and reconstruction from the recent Ditwah devastation, Deputy Finance Minister Anil Jayantha Fernando said. Sri Lanka has estimated the rebuilding cost to be up to USD 7 billion, though accurate estimate is yet to be determined. “Under the last Rebuilding Sri Lanka Fund meeting, we decided to hold a donot conference in January,” Minister Fernando told reporters at a media briefing on Wednesday.
