Sri Lanka records drop in average tourist spending despite higher arrivals in 2025

  Sri Lanka saw a decline in average tourist spending in 2025 despite a strong increase in visitor arrivals, official data show. According to figures from the Central Bank, tourist arrivals rose to 2,362,521 in 2025, up from 2,053,465 in 2024, marking a year-on-year growth of 15.1 percent. However, total earnings from tourism increased only marginally to US dollars 3,219.2 million in 2025, compared to US dollars 3,168.6 million a year earlier, reflecting a growth of just 1.6 percent. Sri Lanka records over USD 8 billion in worker remittances in 2025

Workers’ remittances to Sri Lanka surged to US dollars 8,076.2 million in 2025, up from US dollars 6,575.4 million in 2024, recording a strong year-on-year growth of 22.8 per cent. Tourist arrivals also increased during the year, reaching 2,362,521 in 2025 compared to 2,053,465 in 2024, reflecting a year-on-year growth of 15.1 per cent. Construction at Ambuluwawa Environmental Zone suspended

Construction activities at the Ambuluwawa Environmental Zone have been ordered to be suspended until further notice, pending a technical assessment by experts, the Ministry of Environment said. Hotel owner shot dead in Marine Drive, Dehiwala

  A hotel owner on Marine Drive in Dehiwala was shot dead by an unidentified assailant on Friday night, police said. According to the Police Media Spokesperson, the victim was rushed to the Kalubowila Teaching Hospital following the shooting, where he later succumbed to his injuries. According to the notice issued by the Department of Meteorology today at 4:30 p.m., a warning has been issued regarding a deep depression over the southwest Bay of Bengal for the next 24 hours. The deep depression was located about 150 km east of Batticaloa at 3:30 p.m. on 9 January 2026. Notice for drivers using Colombo – Kandy road

One lane of the Colombo–Kandy main road will be temporarily closed near Kadawatha due to construction work, Police said. The closure will affect a 500-meter stretch of road from the Kadawatha interchange towards Mirigama.
