Tensions rise in Parliament over Bribery DG’s JVP past

A tense situation arose in Parliament today when opposition MP Mujibur Rahman inquired about the new Director General of the Bribery Commission, High Court Judge Ranga Dissanayake. Addressing Parliament today, MP Rahman said there are reports that Ranga Dissanayake had worked for the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna’s (JVP) legal team. COPE reveals Rs. 594 Bn losses at CEB from 2013 to 2024

The Parliamentary Committee on Public Enterprises (COPE) says a loss of Rs. 594 billion has been incurred by the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) from 2013 to 2024.  COPE Chairman MP Nishantha Samaraweera said that a majority of the CEB’s assets and funds have been distributed to private entities.  The information was disclosed during a recent meeting between the COPE Committee and CEB authorities. “The department does not make the necessary estimations and does not stick to the generation plan. Minister Watagala sends LOD to Namal

Deputy Minister of Public Security, Sunil Watagala, has sent a letter of demand requesting Rs. 2 billion in compensation from Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) MP Namal Rajapaksa. This letter of demand was sent on September 22, 2025, by Attorney Manjula Balasuriya on the advice of Deputy Minister Sunil Watagala. ‘Mission Olympics 2028’ athlete support program commences

The Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs has commenced providing financial grants to Sri Lankan athletes under the ‘Mission Olympics 2028’ athlete support programme.  Sports Minister Sunil Kumara Gamage said the programme was officially launched yesterday, where the government was granting an athlete a monthly allowance of Rs. 210,000, while a coach receives Rs. 100,000 per month. “Under the ‘Mission Olympic 2028’ initiative, starting this April, we’re categorizing athletes into four groups and paving the way toward the Olympics. The Sri Lankan Rupee remains steady against the US Dollar at commercial banks in Sri Lanka today (26 Sep), compared to Thursday. At Seylan Bank, the buying rate of the US Dollar remains unchanged at Rs. 299.25, while the selling rate is also unchanged at Rs. 304.75. Vehicle number plates: update from Transport Minister

Minister of Transport Bimal Rathnayake says plans are underway to issue new number plates with more advanced security features. Minister Rathnayake further said that the new number plates will be issued by 15 November 2025.  “We accept there are vehicles operating without number plates now. We are looking at issuing new number plates with advanced security features. We hope to introduce a temporary solution by next week.
