Sri Lanka power ministry to bring generation cost below Rs25 rupees: Minister

ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka’s power ministry is planning to bring generation costs to 25 rupees, down from 37 rupees in mid 2025 using competitive bidding, Energy Minister Kumara Jayakoday said. In July 2024, an electricity unit averaged 37 rupees and it had now come down to 29 rupees, he said. Caught on camera: Container forces bus toward side rail

A container truck was seen driving dangerously on an expressway, forcing a bus toward the side rail despite the bus slowing down to give way. Video footage circulating on social media shows the container truck moving aggressively alongside the bus, leaving the bus with little room to manoeuvre as it was pushed toward the edge of the lane. Govt hospital launches first customised patient meal programme

A pilot project to provide nutritious, customised meals for in-patients has been launched for the first time at a government hospital, with the initiative commencing at the Apeksha Hospital Maharagama on Monday (6). Under the programme, in-patients will receive balanced and nutritious meals served on specially designed customised plates, with rice, vegetables, fish, meat, eggs and other items served separately to improve both nutritional value and appetite. Three Indian nationals arrested with 50kg of Kush at BIA

Three Indian nationals were arrested at Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) with 50 kilograms of Kush cannabis, Sri Lanka Customs said. The narcotics, valued at Rs. 500 million, were seized by officers of the Customs Narcotics Control Unit. The suspects, aged between 25 and 31, arrived at 11:07 a.m. on SriLankan Airlines flight UL 403 from Bangkok. Preliminary investigations revealed that the individuals had been offered a trip to Bangkok in exchange for smuggling the drugs. Sri Lanka to conduct ‘leakage survey’ to determine accurate tourism revenue
